First off, a toothache can be caused by a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes it may be easy for your dentist to see what is happening or going on, such as in the case when there is a large dental cavity or abscess. This is usually easily seen or visible on an x-ray - as well as being easily visible to the eye when doing the dental exam.  Other times, it can be more difficult to know exactly what or where the dental pain is coming from. Figuring out why or what is causing the toothache/tooth pain is very important.

(a) This may be from 3rd molar(s) or wisdom teeth. Also, food can get caught in the back areas of the mouth which can cause an infection around the gums.

(b) TMJ Problems - if getting clicking around the condyle area.

(c) Periodontal pain from bone loss/gum problems.  If a patient has not been to the dentist for a long period, not getting regular dental prophy.

-  Dull Tooth Ache is usually caused by dental pulp nerve damage that may possibly require a root canal or from those that grind their teeth at night.

D. Treatment for a toothache depends on the cause of the toothache or what is causing the tooth pain in the mouth?

When tooth caries are detected, your dentist will try to remove the caries and fill the tooth.  Unless the caries has gone into the pulp canal or has very severely structurally damaged the tooth. In those 2 cases, they may need either to do root canal treatment or may need to extract the tooth. For instance, if have wisdom tooth pain - the best solution may possibly be wisdom tooth extraction.

Before doing a filling, all the tooth decay has to be removed by drilling it out with a handpiece.  Your dentist is very aware, that if the decay has become so deep to be in the pulp canal region of the tooth - then a root canal will be necessary.

Here are some reasons that some tooth decays end up in tooth extraction.

Toothaches Causes and Treatments

a.  The caries have gone towards the root and are below the gum line.

b.  The caries have structurally damaged the tooth extensively, to make the tooth very susceptible to root fracture or tooth fracture.

c.  Root fracture of the tooth.  If there is a root fracture, then most likely the tooth will be extracted.

d  Cost - unfortunately, some patients will have their teeth extracted because they can not afford a root canal or dental crown, etc.

e. Severe gum disease that has caused major bone loss around the teeth.  This can lead to teeth mobility and the possible necessity of tooth extraction.

A root canal might be needed if the cause of the toothache is determined to be an infection of the tooth's nerve. Bacteria that have worked their way into the inner aspects of the tooth cause such an infection. An antibiotic may be prescribed if there is a fever or swelling of the jaw.

 How can Toothaches be prevented?

- Getting regular dental exams.

- Having regular dental prophy (cleaning).

- Regular dental x-rays.

- Good oral hygiene.

Since most toothaches are the result of tooth decay, following good oral hygiene practices can prevent toothaches. Good oral hygiene practices consist of brushing regularly with fluoride-containing toothpaste, flossing once daily, rinsing once or twice a day with an antiseptic mouthwash, and seeing your dentist twice a year for professional cleaning.

In addition to these practices, eat foods low in sugar and ask your dentist about sealants and fluoride applications.

Any time a person may have an emergency dental care problem or need to see a local dentist for an emergency dentist problem.  The best thing to do is to go to your local dentist for a full dental exam. The amount of  X-rays or type of X-rays required - will vary based on how recently you have been to a dentist, when was the last time you had a full set of X-rays, etc.

For dental pain/toothache/tooth pain -- it is good to go see a dentist at your local dental practice/dentist.  Share your problem as best you can and get it remedied.
